In a move to give the growing number of notebook PC users faster, more durable systems that run longer on a battery charge, Hitachi*, Samsung, Seagate Technology and Toshiba have formed the Hybrid Storage Alliance. The goals of the industry group are two-fold: (1) illustrate how flash memory/hard drive hybrid technology can extend the capabilities of today's notebook computers and (2) accelerate market adoption of the technology.

Novell announced its SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 has earned a 2007 InfoWorld Technology of the Year Award, being named "Best Linux Desktop." According to InfoWorld, "Novell's revamped desktop Linux* distribution combines professional fit and finish with unique usability features not available from other vendors. ... Compuware Corporation announced that it has acquired privately held Proxima Technology for approximately $31 million, net of cash. Headquartered in Denver, and with key offices in Australia and the United Kingdom, Proxima has approximately 70 employees.

The mobile video market in China will take off in 2008, driven by interest in the Beijing Olympics. A new study from ABI Research forecasts total mobile video users at more than 32 million in 2008; about 27% of these consumers will use broadcasting technology, and 73% will use unicast streaming technology, while a number of viewers are likely to use both.
