Novell Drives the Development and Adoption of Xforms Through Open Source

0

Novell, as part of its ongoing efforts to drive the adoption of industry standards, today announced its participation in an initiative to bring the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) XForms 1.0 Recommendation to open source. Novell and IBM will work with the Mozilla Foundation to contribute expertise to the development of an XForms implementation for the Mozilla browser. Novell currently uses the XForms standard to provide visual tools in its exteNd Web services platform and will contribute source code from its production-proven implementation to the project.

The XForms standard defines the next generation of Web-based forms, reducing the complexity of developing Web pages and forms that interact with Web services and display information to any Web-enabled device. Novell has been the leading advocate of XForms technology since its inception through the W3C and was the first to deliver an Xforms implementation in its Web services platform.

“Novell is committed to delivering the interoperability of standards-based technology, and our work with the Mozilla Foundation and IBM to deliver an XForms implementation for Mozilla offers a compelling opportunity to influence the future of Web development,” said David Litwack, senior vice president for Novell exteNd and Nsure. “Linux and Mozilla are more than simple open source success stories. They are leading the IT community by delivering viable alternatives that reduce the unnecessary investment and resource dependencies of competitive proprietary solutions.”

The Mozilla Foundation supports the Mozilla project, a leading community of open source developers committed to driving innovation in Web technology. Upcoming versions of the Mozilla Internet suite and products embedding Mozilla technology can optionally include the implementation developed by the Mozilla XForms project. This will also allow Linux desktops to run XForms as a native capability of the Mozilla browser.

Last week at LinuxWorld, Novell announced the availability of two products that will help bring XForms to the large and active community of Linux developers. Novell exteNd 5.2 builds upon Novell’s commitment to XForms by delivering it on Linux, including the latest version of Novell’s leading Linux distribution, SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9. Developers can use Novell exteNd’s drag-and-drop tools to visually create these standards-based XForms, portlets and applications with far less development effort than required by other leading solutions.

Avnet Partner Solutions Helps Resellers Deliver IBM Solutions Through Its On Demand Professional Services Program

0
SAN ANTONIO–Aug. 12, 2004–Avnet Partner Solutions, IBM Americas, the leading value-added distributor of IBM enterprise computing products, storage, software and services, today announced a suite of professional services to extend IBM resellers’ capabilities to provide solution configuration, installation and deployment. Avnet’s On Demand Professional Services program expands reseller resources to implement IBM storage and server solutions in order to enhance their revenues, profitability and overall success.

According to Roger Arndt, vice president of product and customer marketing for Avnet Partner Solutions, IBM Americas, the first On Demand Professional Services offerings centered on complex storage solutions. “Storage is inherently a complicated solution, where resellers need to put together a lot of different pieces — both hardware and software — to make it work,” he said. “Given our technical expertise across all of IBM’s hardware and software brands, it was a natural fit for Avnet Partner Solutions to offer these infrastructure services and help our partners extend their business reach.”

He added, “By reselling Avnet’s Services offerings, our partners can satisfy additional customer requirements and make more money. Or we can work side by side for skills transfer. Either way, we see Professional Services as another important way to enable our partners’ success.”

Avnet Partner Solutions currently offers professional services for Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM), Tivoli Storage Resource Manager (TSRM), FastT, and Shark, and has recently expanded to include solutions for IBM pSeries such as High Availability Multi-Cluster Processor (HAMCP).

Weidenhammer Systems Corp., an IBM Premier Business Partner located in Wayne, Pa., recently relied on Avnet’s On Demand Professional Services to deliver an advanced storage solution for a well-known firm in the financial sector.

“Weidenhammer has been providing solutions to our customers over the past few years in response to government regulations like HIPAA and Sarbanes-Oxley,” said Rick Finley, director of solutions development at Weidenhammer. “Our customers are concerned with these regulations, and need to be able to manage data, not just store it. They are looking to develop archiving policies, for example. Solutions like these call for a wide range of skills across a variety of products.”

The solution for the financial services company called for an optical jukebox for record retention and e-mail archiving, and required Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) and Hierarchical Storage Manager (HSM) — advanced storage skills that the firm did not have in the Florida geography. Weidenhammer engaged Avnet’s On Demand Professional Services to send a local engineer to work on-site with the customer.

According to Finley, the service provided greater flexibility and quicker installation for the end-user customer and expanded Weidenhammer’s ability to deliver sophisticated services outside their geography without incurring significant additional expense.

“Partnering through Avnet Partner Solutions’ On Demand Professional Services extended our regional coverage to the far south,” noted Finley. “They provided services at a reasonable cost with very high levels of customer satisfaction, which is extremely important to us.

“Avnet Partner Solutions was the natural choice for us because of our long-standing relationship,” he explained. “We knew we could expect quality support, and that Avnet Partner Solutions would stand behind their work and do whatever it took to get the job done right.”

IBM Releases New Software to Help Companies Automate and Improve Operations

0

IBM today announced new software that can help companies establish a more detailed roadmap of their business operations. With a better view of how business processes such as customer service, claims processing or supply chain management are being executed across disparate, far-flung networks, companies can detect slowdowns, look for efficiencies and respond faster to customer demand and changing market conditions.

The new software, WebSphere Business Integration Modeler Version 5, uses the latest industry standards and IBM’s leading integration software and development tools to help companies and other organizations model the flow of myriad business processes across their I.T. systems. Companies want to reduce time, cost and complexity as they engineer these increasingly automated processes.

Business process modeling is a core component of Business Performance Management, an industry term for the effort by companies to manage both business processes and IT systems within an integrated framework. WebSphere Business Integration Modeler makes it possible for company management to visualize, design and chart the various operations of their organizations, providing a means for evaluating performance and modifying processes in cases where slow downs or flaws are detected.

“Enabling our clients to manage their end-to-end business processes and drive transformation and best practices is crucial to helping them become on demand businesses,” said Marie Wieck, General Manager, Business Integration and Industry Solutions. “WebSphere Business Integration Modeler reflects the key requirements we have seen from our customers, partners and IBM internally.”

Until recently, organizations took their chances when establishing business processes, since there wasn’t an easy and reliable way to visualize how the operations would impact the enterprise before committing to an infrastructure. Now, with WebSphere Business Integration Modeler, companies have a bird’s eye view into how proposed IT operations will roll out across the organization, and management can tweak implementations and plans based on process models. This is especially useful for providing business value to organizations in today’s climate of mergers and acquisitions, business process outsourcing, process reengineering and automation of formerly manual processes, since companies want to avoid the hassle and expense of re-tooling a process that didn’t perform as expected.

IT analyst firm Gartner anticipates that 70 percent of enterprises will have conducted business process efforts by the end of 2005, helping them improve capabilities to cut costs and boost competitive advantage. Gartner also expects anticipated and active business changes to drive the need for more business modeling, ultimately helping organizations to keep current in a dynamic business world.*

The Star Alliance, a network of 15 airlines, is implementing an IBM modeling solution using the new WebSphere software in order to further enhance collaboration and agreement upon business processes across its members, taking into account the different cultural, geographic and organizational backgrounds.

“Our goal is to optimize collaboration efforts across our wide range of members, and we looked to IBM WebSphere Business Integration Modeler to help facilitate this endeavor,” said Brian Cook, Vice President of Information Technology, Star Alliance. “Modeling technology is helping us to create standards for reducing complexity, achieving harmonization and creating value for our member carriers.”

WebSphere Business Integration Modeler is the only modeling tool built to open standards and based on Eclipse, a universal open source software tool platform, which means it can easily be integrated an organization’s existing architecture. The software is based on BPEL (Business Process Execution Language), an XML-based open standard for defining how to combine Web services to implement business processes, and provides support for WebSphere Business Integration Server Foundation, WebSphere MQ message queuing software and Rational Rose XDE development tools. This open architecture allows customers to work with existing content they may have based on standards like XML or product content like Microsoft Visio, and extend it using WebSphere Business Integration Modeler’s simulation and modeling capabilities.

The Principal Financial Group, a global financial institution offering businesses and individuals a range of financial products and services, is implementing the new IBM software to better model business processes across its many offices, which serve more than 13 million customers worldwide. “We are excited that the new release of WebSphere Business Integration Modeler is powered by Eclipse technology,” said Brian Cornelison, Enterprise Application Integration, Principal Financial Group. “This approach allows the new software to effectively interact with our Eclipse-based source code management tooling, thereby enhancing our ability to use a team approach for model development.”

Pricing and Availability
WebSphere Business Integration Modeler version 5 will be general available on August 12, with multiple language versions available September 30. Pricing starts at $1,250 and includes one year of maintenance support.

Seagate Files Complaint to Prevent Trade Secrets From Being Used By Competitor

0

Seagate Technology today announced that in an effort to protect its trade secrets, the company has filed a complaint in Minnesota State Court for Hennepin County to prevent the misappropriation of trade secrets by Pete Goglia, a former employee who will join Western Digital, a Seagate competitor.

Mr. Goglia was employed at Seagate for 17 years, during which time he was intimately involved with the company’s read/write head development efforts. He recently left to join Western Digital, where he will lead that company’s read/write head development. The suit contends that Mr. Goglia will, in the course of his employment, inevitably disclose proprietary information that is confidential to Seagate, which would violate various statutes and his confidentiality agreements with Seagate.

“This is a situation in which one of our competitors has recently acquired the read/write head assets from a bankrupt supplier, and has stated their need to strengthen their capabilities in that technology,” said Dave Wickersham, Seagate chief operating officer. “We do not wish to impugn Mr. Goglia, but only to ensure that Western Digital does not build its new recording head capabilities with Seagate trade secrets.”

As part of its complaint, Seagate is seeking an injunction to prevent Mr. Goglia from working in certain defined areas of Western Digital’s read/write head development organization for a limited time period to avoid a misappropriation of trade secrets.
