The 2011 Reseller Choice Awards Winners Are…

The results are in! Resellers voted for their best vendor and distributor from over 500 nominees in 80 categories. More than 50 channel executives gathered at “The School Fine Dining” in Unionville, anticipating a Reseller Choice Award for a year of hard work.

Two resellers, Derek Sardo from Rolling Thunder and Rick Jordan from Tenet gave out the Awards to the winners. We thank them for their effort and humor as they got the crowd in the right mood. Great food and drinks were served while the proud vendors and distributors lined up to have their pictures taken and prepare for an ecnTV interview.

When voting, resellers considered several factors including profitability, support, partner programs, sales leads, availability and distribution. However they weighed their decision, they could each cast only one vote per category. They did not have to vote in every category. On January 13th 2012, the voting was closed. The Awards were handed out in a ceremony on February 2nd. See www.ecntv.ca for videos under “awards” tab.

For the 5thconsecutive year, Tech Data won the top spot in each of the distributor categories including Best Distributor of the year. After 5 years in the lead, it is clear that the resellers still like what Tech Data is doing. Several resellers commented on the easy accessibility to the Tech Data team. See the ecnTV interview on www.ecntv.ca with Rick Reid, President of Tech Data on his thoughts on 2011 and outlook for 2012.

Other distributors are catching up as they have reduced the gap to the top spot this year. Ingram Micro jumped ahead of Synnex this year to come in second place, dropping Synnex to third. Best Product Support went to Tech Data followed by Ingram Micro and then BlueStar. Ingram Micro came in second in Best Availability/Delivery as well as Best Terms and Conditions. Synnex was third in these two categories.

Bluestar won the Best Specialty Distributor for the second year in a row. As Bluestar expands their product mix from POS into digital signage and security surveillance solutions, they should continue to widen their appeal to more VARs. Check out the ecnTV interview with Serge Poutchigian of Bluestar on www.ecntv.ca. After winning the award three years ago, Supercom continues to maintain its standing with a strong second place with Arrow in third for Best Specialty Distributor. There were over 30 distributors nominated in this category. It will be interesting to see how these distributors improve in 2012.

Epson was second in the Multi-Function ink-jet. Lexmark came in second for Best Black & White Laser Printer followed by Xerox (replacing Brother from previous year). Check out the interview with Ajay Dhingra from Xerox at www.ecntv.ca .Epson seems to be making more headway with the channel with their recent launch of a new lineup of business printers.

Apple won for Best Tablet, followed by HP and then Lenovo.

The DELL servers are also being touted by the VARS as it came in third place this year.

Best Business Projector went to InFocus, followed by NEC then a tie for third with Viewsonic and BenQ. Viewsonic and BenQ also tied for first place in the Best Home Theatre Projector followed by InFocus and then Sony. Best Portable Projector went to InFocus followed by Viewsonic. As projector prices get lower with more interactive functionality, the projector market should continue to see great growth for the Channel.

Intuit took over the top spot for Best Accounting Software followed by Sage and Microsoft. Best Back Up and Recovery as well as Best IT Security went to Symantec. The company will be rolling out a new approach to delivering back-up and recovery as they look to save businesses up to 80% of the cost. See interview with Fred Patterson of Symantec on www.ecntv.ca . GFI came in second and Sophos third, replacing Kaspersky and Trend Micro respectively from last year in the Best Security category.

GFI was a surprise as they took the top spot for Best Managed Services followed by Cisco and then Kaseya. Level Platforms and N-Able also placed very well and continue to increase every year. There were many companies in this category and we expect it to grow even more in 2012 as the “cloud” meets “managed services”. We will be doing more surveys on both of these categories throughout the year.

Western Digital took the top spot for Hard Drive and Best Portable Storage. Iomega also displaced LaCie out of the third spot in portable storage. Best Desktop Storage went to Seagate. Intel took the #1 spot in SSD to drop Kingston to second.

Microsoft won for Best Productivity Software, Best Messaging/Collaboration, Best Operating System and Best Database. Microsoft is very strong every year in these categories as well as Cloud where it took the #2 spot. See interview with Anne De Aragon from Microsoft on www.ecntv.ca

The accessory market is always in flux as more new players enter and more established companies evolve. The iPad and smart phones are driving more accessories than ever before. Plantronics overtook Logitech for Best Headset. Bose overtook Logitech in Best Speakers. Logitech held on the top spot for webcam, keyboard and mouse. Microsoft came in a close second in these categories. Targus continued to lead the Notebook Carrying Case category but there are many vendors chipping away in this sector. Swiss Army came in second and Mancini third.

Apple gained ground in notebooks as it placed third in Best Business Notebooks, replacing Toshiba. It also took third spot in Best Consumer Notebook and Best Consumer Desktop. Apple came in first Handheld and first in Tablet. Asus took over the #2 spot, dropping RIM into third in the Best Handheld/Pad. HP and Samsung rounded out the 4thand 5thspots respectively.

This year there were three times more Cloud vendors so the voting was spread out. We will be doing more detailed surveys on the Cloud as we monitor the top 50 vendors more closely. VMWare was #1 in Best Virtualization Software, followed by Microsoft and Citrix. VMWare was also tops in Best Cloud Application followed by Microsoft and GFI. Google, CA, Citrix and others were very close behind. EMC was Best in Cloud Storage/Solution. Many more VARs implemented new Cloud solutions for their clients in 2011.

APC wins the top spot for UPS Battery Back Up every year and this year was no exception. Tripp Lite and Eaton came in solid second and third respectively. Both companies also gained significant votes this year to shorten the gap between APC. The customer value and profitability for VARs to sell these power protection solutions are significant. We see this opportunity first hand with Eaton and Tripp Lite at the ChannelNEXT events. Since margins on computers are so low, VARs should be selling a power protection solution with every system to make more profits.

Some vendors did not take home an award, but that does not mean that they did not do well. Maybe some of the more interesting stories have to do with how the vendors in positions 4 through 20 are improving or decreasing year over year. For example, Fortinet have significantly increased their positioning from previous years. They came in 4th in Best Vendor, Best Channel Program, Best Profitability and Best Security, 5th in Best Vendor Support and 2nd in Best Business Router They are a vendor to watch. Avaya is another vendor who has jumped into the #2 spot in Best Enterprise Telephony and Best SMB Telephony. Many vendors are in position to build on their current rankings for 2012.

Every vendor should pay more attention and focus on their perception in the channel and ensure that their channel programs and support are constantly improving. In many cases we see vendors have made significant improvements to their channel activities, but unfortunately they were not able to get their message heard effectively by the Resellers to change their perception. If anything, the Reseller Choice Awards tells vendors that they need to do more with their channel partners. Several studies reaffirms this such as the recent Partner Path study indicating that the #1 goal of vendors in 2012 is to simplify their partner programs see article http://www.e-channelnews.com/ec_storydetail.php?ref=428669 HP's Nathalie Benitah summed it up nicely in her recent interview with ecnTV " If you want to hire more reps or grow your sales force - guess what - use the channel!"
